We designed a Bespoke UK Rail Tour Itinerary for Jo, who was on holiday from France in the summer of 2011...

Hi David!

I had a fantastic trip, thanks to you. Nothing went wrong. All the trains were on time, all the information was correct, the bookings were on the right days in the right places, for the right price and the landscapes were absolute marvels. I could never have imagined the places I visited were in fact so much more beautiful than on TV. I met lots of people, all charming. I particularly miss all the ferries I took, and the islands, and the fish I ate (I love fish). I wasn't quite sure about what I would find in Britain after so many years. I would move to Scotland.

To go back to the trip, here are some comments.

Newcastle: I took a guided tour and went to Wall's End or Wallsend. I also visited the Laing Gallery beside the hotel. Nice City.

Inverness: Ardconnel Guest House is in fact a 5 star hotel, and the hosts are so charming. I would really recommend it. I had long walk along the banks or the river. There is a beautiful park now, with little islands, not far from the centre. I also visited the city and museum of course. I went for a canal "cruise": the loch was wild and the boat turned into a submarine! It was fun.

Portree: The hotel is plain, but beautifully situated. I loved Skye. I took a tour with a Dutch family with Flodigarry Taxis. Very nice driver, and very cheap for a day trip. We went to The Storr, Kilt Rock, Quiraing, Fairy Glens, Dunvegan Castle & Talisker Distillery (i like peaty whisky). I was going to see the sea eagles, but the sea was too wild, as they say. So I have to come back for the eagles.

Glenfinnian: Very nice hotel, nice chef who prepared a special desert for me!. I walked to the monument in the evening. There was no one around. The glen was so beautiful, so perfect, it was unreal. I went back in the morning to look to other way, towards the famous viaduct.

Fort William: I had already been, but it has changed a lot. it looks like a base camp now! I went to see Neptune's Staircase. The hotel is very nice and if I had stayed longer I could have used the spa in the other hotel.

Oban: the Corriemar is a bit far from the centre, but all right. I loved Oban. I went to see Fingal's Cave and Iona Abbey. I also went to Mull. And I walked up a hill call Battle Hill or something like that where you could see all the islands around for miles. I watch the sun set from up there. It was magical.

Tarbet: Glebe house was really nice. I really recommend it. The owner was fantastic. She suggested I visited a small island called Inchcailloch (in Loch Lomond). I spent the day there and it was like being on another planet. Then I went to Luss. Such a pretty place and a most interesting church.

I haven't talked about Aberdeen and Shetland and Orkney. This is for another day.
Best,
Jo
