CLASSIC SWITZERLAND

GLACIER EXPRESS. (St. Moritz/ Davos - Zermatt)

Gornergrat. (Zermatt)

The mighty Matterhorn never fails to fascinate. It is the Alpine paek par excellence and the worlds most photographed mountain. The finest views are from the 3089 metre Gornergrat. Flanked by no fewer than 28 other 4000 metre summits, the Matterhorn can be seen from here at its most scenic. Simply climb aboard the Gornergrat Railway in Zermatt - its the highest cogwheel railway in Europe.

Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn. (Zermatt - Disentis)

Caressed by white cotton grass, Lake Toma sparkles in all its dark-blue beauty as the source of the River Rhine. Its here, not far from Disentis, that the river starts its 1233km journey to the North Sea. Lake Toma is a sightseeing highlight along the 144km route to the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway, which operates from Zermatt to Disentis and from Andermatt to Goschenen. Another "must" is the Oberalp Pass, at 2033 metres particularly popular with hikers.

BERNINA EXPRESS.

Rhaetian Railway. (Graubunden)

The Rhaetian Railway is to Canton Graubenden what the Swiss Federal Railways is to the whole of Switzerland. The crimson carriages of narrow-gauge Rhaetian Railway cover 384 captivating kms and link the cantos most important centres - the cantonal capital of Chur with the thermal spa of Scual, the Alpine resort of St. Moritz with historic Disentis/ Mustair, and the climatic health spa of Davos with Tirano in Italy.

Monte Generoso. (Lugano)

Switzerland may be relatively small - but theres no shortage of attractive excursion destinations. One of the most beautiful, at least in Italian-speaking Ticino, is the Monte Generoso. The trip to the top (1704 metres) is by cosy cogwheel railway from Capolaga- Riva San Vitale, on the southern shore of Lake Lugano. Spectacular views extend to the Alps and Italys Po Valley. Sightseeing attractions include the Grotta dell orso (Bears Cave), tracing the regions pre historic past; and the impressive astronomical observatory.

GOLDENPASS LINE.

Rochers-de-Naye. (Montreux)

Take a trip to the Rochers-de-Naye above Montreux, and the chances are that someone will whistle at you. That "someone" will probably be one of the cute creatures inhabiting the "Marmot Paradise" on this 2042 metre peak. After the ride by cogwheel railway (hourly service), youll also be rewarded by spectacular views of Lake Geneva and the distant Vaudois Alps. You can even sleep on the summit. After watching the sun set, simply settle down for the night in a Mongolian yurt. Sweet dreams included...

The chocolate train. (Montreux - Broc)

You cant visit Switzerland without tasting the chocolate. And you can do this without going anywhere near a shop. Simply climb aboard the "chocolate choo choo" in Montreux and take your seat in either the elegant "Belle Epoque" pullman car or the modern panorama carriage. First stop is Gruyeres with its famous cheese dairy. then its on to Broc and the home of Chocolat Cailler, where you can learn all about Switzerlands sweetest success story.

Jungfraujoch. (Interlaken)

Always wanted to get to the top? Its easy up on the Jungfraujoch - Top of Europe - at 3454 metres, the highest railway station in Europe. The trip by Jungfrau Railway takes you through the mighty Eiger and Monch massif. From the summit station, you can go even higher. The fastest lift in Switzerland transports visitors a further 117 metres to the glass covered Sphinx observation hall, with impressive views extending over the Aletsch Glacier (the longest in the Alps) to other Alpine peaks.
