Swiss Lakes and Mountains

Swiss Lakes and Mountains tour runs for 8 days and operates from the UK. This amazing rail tour is available to book through RailTourGuide and is a excellent way of exploring Switzerland and its scenic mountains by rail.

Swiss Lakes and Mountains 8 Days

Day 1 Take the morning Eurostar train from London to Paris to connect with the TGV high speed service to Geneva for early evening arrival. Stay 1 night at the 3 star Kipling hotel, in the British Raj style, situated between the station and lake.

Day 2-3 Midday train to Montreux where you change for the Golden Pass Panoramic express over the mountains to Zweismmen with new 1st class Belle Epoque carriages (supplement). Local connection to Interlaken arrive late afternoon and stay 2 nights at the Hotel Sonne (3 star). The hotel is situated near Interlaken station, use the Swiss rail pass for excursions to Jungfraujoch (supplement) and other nearby resorts of Wengen, Grindelwald or Murren.

Day 4-5 Short 2 hour direct journey on the Brunig Panoramic train to Lucerne staying 2 nights at the 3 star Hotel Waldstaetterhof close to the lake. See the famous wooden Chapel Bridge which displays a series of 17th century paintings recently rebuilt after it was nearly destroyed by fire in 1993.

Day 6-7 Take the scenic 4 hour trip over the Gotthard pass to Locarno on Lake Maggiore. Stay at the 3 star Dell Angelo in the town centre close to the station. The arcades and piazzas of Locarno are overlooked by subtropical gardens of palms, camellias, bougainvillea, cypress, oleanders and magnolias, which flourish on the lakeside promenades and cover the wooded slopes which crowd in above the town centre.

Day 8 Take the Centovalli railway, one of Switzerland’s most scenic rides. Little, clanky trains traverse the spectacular Centovalli – so named for its ‘hundred’ side valleys – most of the time winding slowly on precarious bridges and viaducts above ravines – sit on the left for the best views. Continue by onward trains from Domodossola changing at Geneva and Paris to arrive back in London in the early evening
