About this journey

This beautiful journey takes in 55 tunnels, 196 bridges, and climbs 2253 metres above sea level to Ospizio Bernina. You’ll have the chance to take in the local cultures of the Alps, from Thusis to Valposchiavo to Tirano, this UNESCO World Heritage site is all around you from the panoramic cars.

Route

Route 1 – Chur to Pontresina Route 2 – Pontresina to Tirano
You’ll leave Chur and head towards Reichenau, crossing paths with The Glacier Express. We continue on South towards Thusis and Tiefencastel in the Domleschg Valley famous for castles and ruins!

We’ll continue on and cross the stunning Landwasser Viaduct, travel through Filisur and travel along the famous loops to gain height to Albula tunnel.

Our journey will finish in Pontresina, one of the most prominent towns in the Upper Engadine Valley.

We’ll begin our journey in the small Swiss mountain village of Pontresina, climbing straight up to the Monteratsch glacier, the highest peak of the canton of Graubünden.

We’ll head towards the highest point of our route, the station of Ospizio, some 2253 meters above sea level. You’ll be able to catch a view of ‘Lago Bianco’ (The White Lake) before we begin our gentle descent.

We’ll drop 1824m down towards Tirano and on to Alp Grüm where you’ll be able to see the dramatic Palü Glacier before we descend even further to the Poschiavo Valley.

We’ll carry on our journey and pass the Lado di Poschiavo (Lake of Poschiavo) before crossing the famous Brusio Spiral Viaduct before crossing the Italian border to complete our journey in Tirano.

Meals

  • There is a roving mini bar on board with regional snack and drinks
  • There is no restaurant car but lunch is available in Poschiavo or in Tirano (Italy).
  • Lunch or dinner will be offered in the panoramic car of the Bernina Express to/from Landquart.

  • Seat reservations are compulsory on all trains

Train Fares

  • St. Moritz or Pontresina to Tirano: 2nd class from £27 per person or 1st class from £48 per person
  • Davos to Tirano: 2nd class from £44 per person or 1st class from £77 per person
  • Chur to Tirano: 2nd class from £55 per person or 1st class from £95 per person

All trains stop at Bergün, Alp Grüm, Poschiavo and Tirano
Southbound journey: Travel from St Moritz via Pontresina.

Northbound journey: change at Alp Grüm or Bergün for Pontresina and St. Moritz, or take a standard train from Tirano.
