Queen of Scots

Explore the Highlands by rail, land and sea

Discover the Scottish Highlands in style. From the land of Mary Queen of Scots herself, see the rolling hills and vast landscapes that she ruled over on this fantastic tour.

About this journey

This tour takes in some of the most beautiful aspects of Scotland and the Scottish Highlands, evoking memories of yesteryear with steam-powered locomotion and relaxing the senses with gentle cruises.

Tour through the Cairngorm Mountains, along the Clyde and past Loch Lomond. Visit Lochs and Glens and peer at distant Islands across the sea. Enjoy little fishing towns like Oban and beautiful abbeys such as that on the Isle of Iona. Travel by steam on the Jacobite Line and again by Steamship on the Sir Walter Scott cruise.

Partake in some monster-spotting in Loch Ness and take in the breathtaking views across the Glenfinnan viaduct.

This is a journey of stunning views of landscapes and lochs, glens and islands. A journey not to be missed.

Day 1

Our hotel for three nights will be the Crianlarich Hotel in Crianlarich. If you are joining us as part of our rail inclusive package, you will begin your adventure even earlier, meeting the Tour Manager in Glasgow and travel along the West Highland Line along the Clyde and past Loch Lomond before finishing off in Crianlarich.

Day 2

Today we’ll take a glide through the Lochs, Glens and the Islands that make up Scotland’s West. We’ll journey along the West Highland Line to the little own of Oban, cruising to the Isle of Mull and Iona to view the beautiful abbey. We’ll have some free time in Oban, to take in the pretty surroundings before making our way back to Crianlarich by rail.

Day 3

Discover the Trossachs National Park, cruising along Loch Katrine on the Steamship Sir Walter Scott. If the watery journey has made you thirsty, why not enjoy a little tipple of Scotland’s biggest export, whiskey, during a local distillery tour.

Day 4

Today Harry Potter fans will rejoice as we travel along the famous Jacobite Steam Train* over the Glenfinnan Viaduct from Fort William. We’ll see Bonnie Prince Charlie’s monument and Loch Shiel as we carry on through the Atlantic coastline, experiencing the golden white sands and instant views of Eigg and Rhum. Leisure time today will be in Mallaig, we suggest spending a portion of your tie taking in the beautiful views across the sea, can you spot the Isle of Skye in the distance? The Jacobite train takes us back to Fort William where we’ll rejoin our private coach to take us to our hotel for the next four nights, The Palace of Inverness, on the journey you’ll get to see views of the Great Glen and Loch Ness.

Day 5

Today is a day filled with amazing journeys! Travel by rail coast to coast along the very famous Kyle Line to the Kyle of Lochalsh, a line immortalised by Sir Michael Palin in his original “Great Railway Journeys of the World” series. You’ll be greeted by stunning views across the Loch to the Cullin Hills on the Isle of Skye. We’ll enjoy a light lunch at the Lochalsh Hotel before making our way back to Inverness.

Day 6

Travel by steam and by coach today on a circular journey including a ride on the Strathspey Railway, transferring to a coach to journey onwards to Ballindalloch Castle and Gardens. Our coach takes us on a meandering journey through the incredible landscape of the Scottish Highlands, back to Inverness.
