About this journey

Just like it’s sister service, The Northern Explorer, the Tranz Alpine is an incredibly beautiful scenic journey, loved by travellers across the world. The trains run daily from Christchurch and takes in Arthur’s Pass and Greymouth on the southern coast.

You’ll get to see beautiful mountains, beautiful plains, and the snowy Southern Alps.  Perfect for a day trip! Greymouth is well connected for onward journeys to continue your adventures.

The Seating

The seating on board the Tranz Alpine is arranged in a 4 seat with an aisle down the middle configuration. These can either be as a table or in forward-facing pairs. The large panoramic windows make this a great way to experience the dramatic landscape

On-Board Amenities

There is a café carriage on board, serving a range of light meals, drinks (both soft drinks and alcoholic drinks), and snacks. Each carriage has toilet facilities on board and a fantastic viewing carriage to immerse yourself in the landscape.

Dates

This is a regular train service which can be used to hop on and hop off.  The train is daily, leaving Christchurch at 8:15 am, stopping in Greymouth for 1 hour before departing again at 2:05 pm and arriving back at Christchurch at 6:31 pm. The TranzAlpine does not run on Christmas day.
